You must all be dying to know what we’re going to do on the pre-convention day trip! Well, we can now reveal that we’re visiting one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands: Zutphen. This small, historic city on the river IJssel was a member of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, and its beautiful town centre is well-preserved.
For more info on Zutphen, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zutphen
The general plan for the day:
We will meet at Thuis, the Convention venue, at 09.15. We’re hiring a bus to take us to Zutphen (departure 09.30). It will take us approx. 50 minutes to get there.
We have two activities planned in Zutphen:
A guided walk around the town (approx. 90 minutes). The guide will tell us about the history of Zutphen, and show us all the best spots (in English).
And a visit, including a guided tour, to the Sint Walburgiskerk (St Walpurga’s Church). Besides the church being worth a visit in its own right, it houses the Librije: a chain library that was established in 1564. It is one of only 3 original chain libraries still remaining in Europe. Many the books on display date back to the very early days of the printing press, and there are several unique works among them. For more info, see https://librije-zutphen.nl/en/collection/.
Each of these activities can take only a limited number of people at once, so we will split the group into smaller groups and take turns.
You will also have plenty of time to have lunch and go for coffee (both not included in the price), explore the town, release books, etc. (Van Someren & Ten Bosch bookshop has been in business since 1844 – just saying…)
Please note that there will obviously be a certain amount of walking involved, and part of the chain library is up a narrow, winding staircase.
The bus will pick us up again at around 16.30 and take us back to Wageningen via a more scenic route.
The trip will cost between 40 and 45 euros per person, depending on how many people sign up. We can take a maximum of 36 participants.
Please sign up, by replying in the forum thread (https://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/22/598329), as soon as possible but no later than 28 February. If we reach the maximum of 36, we can put people on a waiting list in case there are cancellations. Payment details will follow later, when we know the exact costs.
